Photographic prints relating to the funeral of Pope John XXIII (d. 3 June 1963). The prints are mainly press photographs from Fotografia Pontificia Giordani, Rome.

'The Dawn' / War of Independence Film

Photographic prints (stills) from the 1936 film 'The Dawn'. This was the first full-length Irish feature film with sound. 'The Dawn' was made by Hibernia Films and was produced and directed by Tom Cooper. Scenes from the film were shot in and around Killarney, County Kerry. The film tells a tale of romance and tragedy set against the backdrop of the War of Independence. The cast included 250 amateur actors drawn from the locality. Some of the cast were IRA veterans of the War of Independence. Several of the prints show reconstructions of an ambush on British forces.

Letter from Margaret Mary Pearse, St. Enda’s School, Rathfarnham, to Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap. (6 April 1955), conveying her blessings at Easter and remembering her pilgrimage to Rome with the friar. The letter is attached to a typescript (with manuscript additions) of an article titled ‘The books we want written’.

The Big House

Photographic prints compiled for an article by T.F. O’Sullivan titled ‘The Big House’, published in 'The Capuchin Annual' (1977). The file includes prints of the interior and exterior of Borris House, the ancestral home of the MacMurrough Kavanaghs in County Carlow, and a depilated shopfront possibly in Borris. The prints are credited to T.F. O’Sullivan. The file also includes images of Glashganny Lock on the River Barrow.

Teresa Brayton

Photographic prints for an article by James Flynn titled ‘Teresa Brayton, 1868-1943’, published in 'The Capuchin Annual' (1961). The file includes prints of the unveiling of a Celtic Cross over the grave of Teresa Brayton in the churchyard of Cluain Conaire, County Kildare, by President Éamon de Valera. Other prints show the Rev. Dr. Corkery speaking at the unveiling, and the countryside which inspired Brayton’s writings.
