Quest collectors’ books

The volumes list the names and addresses of parishioners in the Diocese of Ossory (and to a lesser extent in the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin). The lists were probably compiled by the Capuchin friars for the purposes of collecting quest money. The books are divided by geographical and administrative area (mainly townland and parish). Divisions include Rathdowney, Borris-in-Ossory, Castletown, Mountrath, Aghaboe (book IV); Bennetsbridge, Drumbell, Thomastown, Gowran, Castlewarren (book VI).

Legacies and Bequests

This sub-series contains wills, executors’ accounts, solicitors’ correspondence and related legal documents re legacies, bequests, and other forms of donations to the Capuchin community in Kilkenny. The material is arranged chronologically. The Mass Intentions’ Ledger Book at CA KK/1/1/3/5 contains a list of mass bequests from c.1930-60.

Writ of summons to appear at the High Court of Justice

Writ of summons to John Hyland, Clonmoran, County Kilkenny, executor of the will of the late Margaret Delahunty (d. 21 July 1894), to appear at the High Court of Justice, probate division, to state whether he will bear the burden of the execution of said will. The guardian (Fr. Peter Bowe OSFC) of the Capuchin Friary, Kilkenny, is named is named as one of the beneficiaries of the will.

Letters re attendance and cessation of membership of the Third Order of St. Francis in Kilkenny. The letters refer to cessation of active membership as a brother and registration as an isolated tertiary.

Register of library books borrowed by Third Order members

Record book of library books borrowed by members of the Third Order of St. Francis attached to the Capuchin Friary, Kilkenny. Entries made in the volume are made in an ad-hoc manner but include the name of the borrower, the title of the book borrowed and the date of return. A few entries in the volume appear to be records of subscriptions received from Third Order members.

Cash account book of sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis

The volume is titled ‘Cash account book of the Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis attached to the Capuchin Convent, Walkin Street, Kilkenny, under the presidency of the Father Guardian, the Very Rev. Albert Mitchell OFSC’. The volume contains monthly debit and credit cash entries. Most of the income is derived from subscriptions, donations, and collections.

Cash and expenditure book for the sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis

Cash and expenditure book for the sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis attached to the Capuchin Friary, Kilkenny. Expenditure accounts include monies for the making of habits, scapulars, cords, the purchase of rosary beads, and donations made to ‘deserving sisters’. Income was principally derived from reception money, membership dues and collections. Year-end statements of account are given in the volume. Entries are periodically signed by Provincial Ministers at visitations.

Prefect and treasurer’s books of the Third Order of St. Francis, Kilkenny. The prefects are recorded as James Grace, John Saunders, Patrick Staunton, Daniel Lambe, William Deegan, and John Wall. The prefects’ card books list arrears and subscriptions of named Third Order members. The treasurer’s book lists monthly totals received from the aforementioned prefects.
