A large bound volume containing documents, photographs, and newspaper clippings relating to the 1916 Rising. The volume holds an original copy of the 'Irish War News' (25 April 1916) along with original postcard prints, memoriam cards for the Rising’s leaders and other ephemera. Some of the newspaper clippings are of articles reporting on subsequent commemorations of the insurrection. The volume also holds photographs, clippings, and printed ephemera relating to prominent Irish artists and exhibitions of their work.

A bound volume with a manuscript annotation on the spine which reads ‘Art and Artists’. The volume contains newspaper and magazine clippings, correspondence (particularly re reproductions of paintings), printed ephemera (exhibition catalogues), and photographic content relating to prominent Irish artists, and exhibitions of their work. Many of these artists were associated with Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap. and ‘The Capuchin Annual’. The file also includes colour and black and white reproductions of work by old masters and various continental artists. Includes assorted clippings and some original letters from Jack B. Yeats, and documents re Seán O’Sullivan RHA, Patrick Joseph Tuohy, James Humbert Craig, and the sculptors John Hogan, and Jerome Connor. Also includes some original letters from George Noble Plunkett (1851-1948). With a typescript list of paintings loaned by ‘The Capuchin Annual’ office to the Tuam Art Club exhibition in 1945.

A bound volume with a title on the front cover which reads ‘Newspaper Cuttings’. The volume contains numerous original letters and newspaper clippings offering mainly favourable testimonials on editions of ‘The Capuchin Annual’ published in 1934 and 1935. The volume contains content from various prominent politicians, religious figures, artists, and writers including Peter F. Anson, Fr. Paschal Robinson OFM, Sophie Raffalovich O’Brien, Fr. James O’Mahony OFM Cap., Fr. Michael O’Shea OFM Cap., Archbishop William Hayden, D.L. A bound volume containing newspaper clippings with some manuscript notes and annotations compiled by Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap. The volume includes obituaries and tribute articles for figures broadly associated with the Irish Revolution. Includes articles relating to Sara Mellows, Helena Concannon, Agnes O’Farrelly, Bishop John Dignan, Patrick J. Fleming, and Frank Fahy. Some of the articles refer to commemorations of various events during the revolutionary decade. The volume is a ‘Marathon account book’.

Bound Postcard Print Volume

A bound volume containing colour postcard images of scenic locations around Ireland, mostly in County Kerry. Includes various scenes around Killarney. The volume also includes postcards of Croagh Patrick in Mayo and an image of the control tower at Shannon Airport in County Clare. All the postcards have manuscript notes on the reverse by Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap. The notes appear to be draft letters written by Fr. Senan to his secretary Mollie Baxter in circa 1953. There are duplicate postcards, and some are loose within the volume.

A bound volume with a manuscript annotation on the spine which reads ‘Jack B. Yeats / National Loan Exhibition / 1945’. The volume contains photographic prints showing some of the 179 Yeats’s paintings on display at the exhibition. The exhibition was held at the National College of Art in Dublin in June and July 1945. Fr. Senan Moynihan played a significant role in organising the exhibition. Printed extracts from a catalogue are extant in the volume which include information on painting titles, dimensions, and provenance. The volume also includes some related clippings re Yeats’s artistic output, a Christmas card from the Cuala Press, letters from Yeats to Fr. Senan, and a ink-sketch signed by the artist. The letters date from 1941 to 1946. Several of Yeats’s paintings displayed in the exhibition including ‘The Funeral of Harry Boland’ (1922) and ‘Communicating with Prisoners’ (1924) were in the possession of Fr. Senan at the time of the National Loan Exhibition.

The file also includes loose correspondence relating to the event including many copy letters from Fr. Senan, mostly dating to 1944. Some original letters to Fr. Senan are also extant in the file. The correspondents include Jack B. Yeats, C.P. Curran, Ernie O’Malley, D.L. Kelleher, P.J. Little, Monsignor Pádraig de Brún, Richard J. King, James Sleator, Victor Waddington, R.R. Figgis, Laurence Campbell, Josephine McNeill, and Séamus Ó Braonáin. The file also contains several typescript lists of paintings by Yeats which were exhibited.

The volume contains varied clippings relating to the international Catholic Press and periodical literature particularly in the United States, Canada, and Australia. There are a few clippings which reference the writer Hilaire Belloc (1870-1953).

Douglas Hyde Tribute Volume

A bound volume containing newspaper clippings, photographs, and printed ephemera relating to the death of Douglas Hyde (Dubhghlas de hÍde). The son of a Church of Ireland Rector, Douglas Hyde was an eminent playwright, Irish language scholar, and folklorist. In 1893 he founded the Gaelic League (Conradh na Gaeilge) which rapidly became a popular cultural movement. In the public sphere, Hyde served as the first President of Ireland from 1938 until his retirement in June 1945. He died on 12 July 1949 and was accorded a state funeral which was held on 14 July. His funeral service took place in the Church of Ireland St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. Hyde was buried in Frenchpark, County Roscommon, where had spent most of his childhood. The volume contains numerous newspaper tributes and eulogies and some original material in Hyde’s own hand. The volume is a ‘Richview Account Series Book’ printed by Browne & Nolan in Dublin.
