Correspondence Fr. Thomas Rocks OFM Cap., Guardian, Ard Mhuire Capuchin Friary, with Fr. Brendan O’Mahony OFM Cap., Provincial Minister, and Fr. Nicholas O’Brien OFM Cap., Provincial Secretary, mostly regarding property and financial matters pertaining to the Ards foundation. The subjects include improvements to the Friary and Retreat House, the potential sale of a tract of land called ‘Manus Lough’, the financial demands of the Ards community, the leasing of a camping site to the CBSI, and the potential lease of the disused pier at Sheephaven Bay. The file includes a schedule denoting the subventions from the Provincial (Central) Fund to the Ard Mhuire building fund from 1950-77. A letter (18 Feb. 1977) from Fr. Nicholas reads:
'The first agreement for the use of the pier (then known as “the flagstaff”) was made by the then Guardian – Fr. Cassian O’Shea, [who was guardian from 1937-43] with “Irish Minerals Co.” of Arklow. … And it was during this time that the pier as we know it today was constructed including the extension back to the friary grounds and the protecting wall – later the shed and repair workshop was added'.

Lease by Robert Warner to John Henry Gamble of a stable, coach house and other concerns on Queen Street, Cork, lately in the possession of William Cash and George Evans situated in the parish of Holy Trinity, Cork, for 599 years at the yearly rent of £25. A sketch of map of the demised property is endorsed on the verso. Scale: 40 feet to 1 inch. With counterpart and three typescript copies made by J.C. & A. Blake, solicitors, Cork, 22 Nov. 1906.

Lease by Robert Warner to Thomas Ronayne Sarsfield and others of a piece of ground adjoining Queen Street ‘bounded on the east partly by a store and concerns in the possession of John McNamara, Edward John Gould and Michael McNamara … and to the rear by Mister Dunan’s dwelling house, and on the south by the Chapel of the late Reverend Mister Mathew’, for 750 years at the yearly rent of £40. A sketch map of the premises referred to in the said lease is attached. The map was drawn by Frederick A. Klein, South Mall, Cork. Scale: 20 feet to 1 inch. With a typescript copy by Gregg, Jermyn & Sons, solicitors, and a registered memorial of the said deed dated 22 July 1929.

With similar assignments of portions of the said premises to Joseph Sullivan, King Street, Cork, hotel keeper, for £285, and to Thomas Joseph Ollivere Esq., Cook Street, Cork, dental surgeon, for £300. With related requisitions on title.

Agreement of Fr. Fiacre Bartholomew Brophy OSFC and Fr. Matthew Thomas O’Connor OSFC, Father Mathew Quay, Cork, and Fr. Jarlath Thomas Hynes, OSFC and Fr. Augustine John Hayden OSFC, Rochestown, Cork (the vendors), with Joseph Sullivan, King Street, Cork, merchant, for the residue of a term of 800 years granted in a lease from Joseph King to John Reynolds, dated 28 Feb. 1805, at the yearly rent of £34 2s 6d. The agreement is subject to certain legal stipulations and covenants including the requirement to keep the top garret and second floor windows which overlook the ‘recreation gardens of the vendors fitted with muffed and ribbed glass’. Lease from John Lecky, merchant, Cork, to Fr. Theobald Mathew OSFC, ‘Provincial of the Order or Society of Capuchin friars, Cork’, of a plot of ground, stores, linnies, tenements and premises situated on Morrison’s Island (otherwise Island Nagay), parish of Holy Trinity, Cork, for 840 years at the yearly rent of £80. With attached sketch map of the said plot which measured 105 feet at the frontage onto Charlotte Quay; 190 feet fronting onto Queen Street; and bordered to the west (140 feet) and north (93 feet) by His Majesty’s Ordnance Stores. Bernard Precious OSFC, Catholic clergymen, Queen Street, and Abraham Sutton, White Street, shop owner, to James O’Connell and others of a large room on the ground floor of the premises lately demised by the lessors from Robert Warner (see CA HT/2/1/2/13) ‘now known as the room of the Third Order of St. Francis’, on Charlotte Quay, for 740 years at the yearly rent of £40. A sketch map of the demised premises (measuring 36 feet by 34 feet) is attached. With counterpart lease and fire policy from Atlas Assurance Company, for the trustees of the Third Order of St. Francis, for ‘their Hall consisting of the ground floor only, at the rear of a store on Charlotte Quay … in the sole tenure of the said Society …’. 25 Mar. 1877.

(1893-1977), guardian, Holy Trinity Friary, Cork, regarding liability for property tax and deductions of income tax from ground rents payable by the Capuchin friars to the Dominican Order (Charlotte Quay) and to a Mrs Gardiner. With a letter from Robert McClement, auditor, enclosing a schedule of the ground rents paid by the Capuchins.
