Funeral of Michael Collins

A photographic print of the funeral of procession of Michael Collins in Dublin on 28 August 1922. The volume contains nine images of the funeral procession including images of Dublin Fire Brigade personnel and their horse-drawn vehicles and motor fire engines.

George Gavan Duffy’s Children

An image of Colm and Máire Gavan Duffy, the children of George Gavan Duffy (1882-1951), an Irish politician, jurist, and solicitor, and one of the signatories to the Anglo-Irish Treaty. As the caption notes, the two are ‘photographed in Paris [in] 1920 during their father’s term of office as representative of the Irish Republic’.

Howth Tramway Ticket, 1916 Rising

A ticket for the Hill of Howth Tramway, operated by the Great Northern Railway Company, purchased on 24 April 1916, the first day of the Easter Rising. The ticket was purchased by the family of T. Molloy and his description conveys his personal memories of that day. It reads ‘Ticket issued for Easter Monday 1916 to one of a family going to Howth for the day. Coming to Howth Station to return home in the evening great crowds of people were told that no trains were running as there was trouble in the city. I, at the age eight, with my seven-year-old brother, & my father & mother, who carried another two-year-old brother, had, like many others, to walk home that night’.

Invitation to First Meeting of Dáil Éireann

An invitation card for the first meeting of Dáil Éireann held on 7 January 1919. This inaugural meeting was held in private with only Sinn Féin members invited. The principal business conducted at this meeting was the election of a committee tasked with the drawing up of key documents to be discussed at the first sitting of the Dáil proper which was held on 21 January in the Round Room of the Mansion House in Dublin.
