Irish Emigrants and English Mobs / Letter from the Bishop of Limerick

A leaflet with the text of a letter from Edward Thomas O’Dwyer, the Bishop of Limerick, to the editor of the ‘Munster News’ dated 10 November 1915. The text reads ‘the treatment which the poor Irish emigrant lads have received at Liverpool is enough to make any Irishman's blood boil with anger and indignation. What wrong have they done to deserve insults and outrage at the hands of a brutal English mob? They don't want to be forced into the English Army, and sent to fight English battles in some part of the world’.

Irish Dancing, Coláiste na Rinne, County Waterford

A photographic postcard print captioned ‘Learning Irish Dancing at Ring College’ (Coláiste na Rinne) in County Waterford. Coláiste na Rinne was established in 1905 and officially recognised as an Irish language summer school in 1907. The principal founders of the college were Pádraig Ó Cadhla (1875-1948), an organiser for Conradh na Gaeilge in the locality, and Richard Henebry (1863-1916), also known as Risteard de Hindeberg, a Waterford-born priest, Irish language scholar and traditional music collector.

Irish College of St. Anthony, Leuven, Belgium

An postcard print of the entrance to the Irish College of St. Anthony in Leuven (Louvain) in Belgium. The partially obscured inscription over the archway reads ‘Do ċum glóire Dé agus onóra na hÉireann (‘For the glory of God and the honour of Ireland’) and is taken from the ‘Annals of the Four Masters’.

Irish Artists / 1916 Rising / Bound Document and Photographic Volume

A large bound volume containing documents, photographs, and newspaper clippings relating to the 1916 Rising. The volume holds an original copy of the 'Irish War News' (25 April 1916) along with original postcard prints, memoriam cards for the Rising’s leaders and other ephemera. Some of the newspaper clippings are of articles reporting on subsequent commemorations of the insurrection. The volume also holds photographs, clippings, and printed ephemera relating to prominent Irish artists and exhibitions of their work.

Irish Army Manoeuvres

An image of Irish Army armoured cars on manoeuvres in the countryside. The vehicles are most likely Swedish-built Landsverk armoured cars. The print is credited to the ‘Irish Press’.

Ireland / Bound Photographic and Document Volume

A bound volume with a manuscript title on the spine which reads ‘It’s Ireland’. The volume contains a very large number of postcard prints and photographic prints, newspaper clippings, original historical documents, and printed ephemera. Many of the pasted-in newspaper clippings (some of which are frayed and damaged) date from 1944 to 1946. These articles include references to the ongoing war in Europe, censorship in Ireland, the death of Frank Ryan, the execution of William Joyce (better known as ‘Lord Haw-Haw’), Eduard Hempel (the leading German diplomat in Ireland during the Second World War), and various political, artistic, and cultural events. Several invitation cards to Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap. and Fr. Gerald McCann OFM Cap. for exhibitions and cultural events are also pasted into the volume. There are also a few clippings from the ‘Irish Travel’ magazine, the official organ of the Irish Tourist Association. The volume pages are not paginated.

• Postcard prints of Cobh (formerly Queenstown) in County Cork.
• Postcard print of Mount Carmel Monastery, Haifa.
• Postcard prints of interior arrangements and altars for Catholic worship onboard several White Star ocean liners including the ‘Majestic’, ‘Megantic’, ‘Olympic’, ‘Homeric’, and ‘Calgaric’
• Postcard prints of the Capuchin Friary in Pantasaph, Wales.
• Post card prints of Port Said in Egypt and colour prints titled ‘Bedouin’, ‘The Pyramids of Gizeh’ and ‘Eventide in Desert’.
• Postcard views of various scenes in Jerusalem and in Bethlehem, Palestine.
• Postcard print of the entrance to the Irish College of St. Anthony in Leuven, Belgium.
• Postcard prints depicting aspects of the missionary work of French Capuchin friars (and female Franciscan religious) in India and in Africa (particularly in Somalia and Abyssinia).
