The letter reads ‘Shortly after the capitulation of Sedan, I was informed by Mr. T.D. Sullivan that an accredited agent of the French government was in Dublin … and that he wished to see me’. Anson also refers to his own writing projects and to the difficulties being endured because of the war. He writes ‘Life goes on quietly apart from almost daily wailings of the siren. So far Macduff has escaped bombs, unlike many other ports on this north east coast’.

He also refers to his own contribution to the ‘Annual’. He also mentions his great friendship with the late Fr. Albert Bibby OFM Cap. who gave him the Father Mathew temperance pledge. He adds ‘The little medal he gave me was on my watch chain when I entered Portland Gaol but I was unable to recover any property when released, so I am bound by a Capuchin pledge until death’.
