A large bound volume with a manuscript annotation on the spine which reads ‘The North / Partition / Northern Ireland’. The volume contains original letters and draft manuscript and typescript contributions and commentary re the ‘Orange Terror’ article by 'Ultach' (J.J. Campbel) published in ‘The Capuchin Annual’ (1943). The file includes letters from Bishop Daniel Mageean, George Noble Plunkett, J.J. Campbell, Eamon Donnelly, Senator David Robinson, Maud Gonne MacBride, Jack B. Yeats (refusing to contribute a commentary on the article), and Sir Shane Leslie. The volume also contains many general newspaper clippings about partition. The volume also includes a printed flier from Ailtirí na hAiséirghe (1943). The volume includes content mainly from 1941-9 but it also includes some newspaper and magazine clippings from c.1917-1932, particularly relating to the treatment of the Catholic minority in Northern Ireland. The volume is not paginated.
A report on a meeting of Irish socialists in the Mansion House, Dublin. The purpose of the meeting was to ‘congratulate the Russian people on the triumph they have won for democratic principles’. The speakers included Dr Kathleen Lynn, Constance Markievicz, William O’Brien, and Maud Gonne MacBride. The article reports that ‘The Red Flag’ was sung at the meeting. The article was published in the ‘Irish Times’ (5 February 1918).
A flier with the text of a satirical republican ballad titled ‘The Rocky Road to Berlin’. The composition is credited to Cathal Mac Dubhghaill (d. 1926).
A manuscript text titled ‘The significance of Fr. Peter O’Leary’. The text reads ‘He [Ó Laoghaire] visualized an Ireland without a city. The city pained him, and he misjudged it – reading “Sgothbhualadh” you sense that’. The article is likely incomplete.
A flier with the text of a ballad celebrating ‘The Smith of Ballinalee by ‘“Sean”, East Limerick’. Seán Mac Eoin's exploits as commander of the IRA's north Longford flying column, which carried out successful attacks on British forces at Ballinalee (November 1920) and Clonfin, near Granard (February 1921), earned him the sobriquet ‘the Blacksmith of Ballinalee’.
