Connolly SJ, editor, ‘Studies, An Irish Quarterly Review’, 34 Lower Lesson Street, Dublin, and other Jesuits involved in publishing. ‘The Month’ was a Catholic review magazine published by the English Province of the Society of Jesus. The letters mainly refer to literary matters and contributions by Father Rope to various periodicals. The file also includes several cards from Andrew Hilliard Atteridge (1852-1941), 3 Killowen Villas, Isleworth, Middlesex, William Frederick Paul Stockley, and Germaine Stockley (Woodside, Tivoli, Cork).

A bound volume of letters to Fr. Henry Rope from William Frederick Paul Stockley (Woodside, Tivoli, Cork). The volume is annotated on the spine ‘Letters to Father H.E.G. Rope / VIII’. The first item in the volume is a letter from Fr. Rope to Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap. referring to his long-standing friendship with the late Andrew Hilliard Atteridge (1852-1941). The letter is dated 25 April 1951 and contains information about Atteridge’s life. The Stockley letters are mostly personal correspondence with references to contemporary politics and various religious subjects.

Joseph Keating SJ, editor of ‘The Month’ from 1912 to 1939. ‘The Month’ was a Catholic review magazine published by the English Province of the Society of Jesus. The letters refer to literary matters and contributions by Father Rope to the periodical.

The volume contains newspaper and magazine clippings, correspondence (particularly re reproductions of paintings), printed ephemera (exhibition catalogues), and photographic content relating to prominent Irish artists, and exhibitions of their work. Many of these artists were associated with Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap. and ‘The Capuchin Annual’. The file also includes colour and black and white reproductions of work by old masters and various continental artists. Includes assorted clippings and some original letters from Jack B. Yeats, and documents re Seán O’Sullivan RHA, Patrick Joseph Tuohy, James Humbert Craig, and the sculptors John Hogan, and Jerome Connor. Also includes some original letters from George Noble Plunkett (1851-1948). With a typescript list of paintings loaned by ‘The Capuchin Annual’ office to the Tuam Art Club exhibition in 1945.

• Clippings (obituaries) and photographs relating to the death of Albert Power (1881-1945). The photographs show Éamon de Valera, Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap. and Fr. • Photographic copies of artwork by various old masters.

The volume includes several obituaries for prominent Irish emigrants (both religious and lay) in North America. The file also includes original photographs and ephemera relating to a pilgrimage to Ireland organised by Richard Cushing (1895-1970), Archbishop of Boston, in 1949. The photographs show Archbishop Cushing meeting various political and religious figures, including President Seán T. O’Kelly, Taoiseach John A. Costello, Archbishop John Charles McQuaid, Archbishop John D’Alton, Paul A. Dever (Governor of Massachusetts), and the Capuchin friars, Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap., and Fr. Henry Anglin OFM Cap. A file containing an Irish language manuscript titled ‘An Craos-Deamhan’ (with English translation) by An tAthair Peadar Ó Laoghaire. The manuscript (with the accompanying translation) was seemingly sent for serial publication in the ‘Cork Sun’ newspaper. The newspaper ran from 18 April 1903 to 1905. The text was sent to Máire Ní Shíthe, the Irish-language editor of the ‘Cork Sun’ (43 Grand Parade, Cork). The text relates to Cathal mac Finguine (died 742). The tale was edited in Irish with an Irish-English glossary by Ó Laoghaire in 1905. It was published by An tAthair Peadar as ‘An Craos–Deamhan ó’n seana–sgéal 'Aislinge Meic Con Glinne' (Dublin, 1905). An envelope in the file is annotated in the hand of Fr. Albert Bibby OFM Cap. and reads: ‘The original manuscript of ‘An Craos-Deamhan’ by an tAthair Peadar Ó Laoghaire with his own English translation’.

The volume contains reviews of Alice Curtayne’s ‘St. Anthony of Padua’ published by The Father Mathew Record Office as ‘Capuchin Monographs No. 1’ in 1931. Several letters and ephemera referring to the publication are also pasted into the volume. Includes reviews published in the ‘Irish Independent’, ‘Cork Examiner’, ‘Irish Catholic’, ‘The Cross’, ‘The Kerry Champion’, ‘Sunday Independent’, ‘Irish Press’, and ‘Kilkenny People’.
