Typed note to + McQuaid. Una Byrne has forwarded some notes on subversive activities. ‘Brian’ is the Minister for Justice and Jerry is Jerry Kerrigan, her right hand man. Enclosed is a copy of Irish Socialist, June 1966. An article, one of a series, shows there is no conflict between Socialism and religion. Contains a bitter analysis of Fr. James Kavanagh’s Manual of Social Ethics.

Report on the Irish Workers’ League. General feeling is that the League is losing ground. At their meeting at Mansfield Corner their speakers were attacked, so the League has gone underground. Last summer it held camps at Dundalk, Skerries and Killybegs. Excursion to Enniskerry ended with a drunken orgy. Links between the IWL and the ‘folk university’. Information on Miss Annie Peach, Miss Hilda Verlin, Sean Nolan the following need watching: John Byrne, Patrick O’Neill and Stephen Daly. John Dalton has returned to Church.

Typed copy of a letter to Mrs. Byrne from Mrs. Wells, IHA Committee. The Committee is disappointed and surprised that she did not answer their letter. Ask her to sign Form as proof of her good faith.

Typed copy of statement read by Mrs. Una Byrne at a meeting of IHA. As Committee looked upon her with hostility she refused to either deny or admit the accusations. Would consider discussing the matter when the informant was present. She refused to be intimidated by their action. Regarding the Roscommon Herald she was not connected and would be glad to thrash it out in court. Reasons for not signing confession given.

Copy of typed letter to Mrs Una Byrne from IHA. Committee do not see any desire on the part of Mrs Byrne to cooperate. They request from her proof of members who are Communists and evidence that they influence the aims and policy of the Association. If she is unable to give concrete facts her remarks will be considered destructive. In her reply (2 April 1953) Mrs Byrne considers it extraordinary that the Committee expect cooperation considering the tactics they have used against her. She considers their letter “of colossal impertinence”, and when she receives an apology she will consider giving them the information they request.

Handwritten letter to + McQuaid from Una Byrne saying she heard Miss Blake, a teacher in Kings Inn School, speak at a IHA meeting and that there is no doubt of her Marxist sympathies. She attends meetings in the house of Jeffrey Palmer in Castleknock.

Typed copy of letter to Mrs Una Byrne from Andree S. Skeffington and Kathleen MacLarnan Wells. It was noted that she had put her name down for several sub-committees. The Committee cannot see its way to appointing her to any sub-committee until she has given written assurance that she has changed her mind since her letter of 2nd April 1953.

Handwritten letter to + McQuaid [from Una Byrne – name and address redacted] informing him that the International Alliance of Women were holding their Congress in Athens. If Mrs Byrne could not go Mrs Tweedy would ask Mrs Brown or Mrs Lloyd both of whom have no religion. If all failed Mrs Tweedy herself would go. If Mrs Byrne refuses to go Ireland will be represented by somebody of different spiritual and political views from those of Catholic Ireland.

Typed note saying the attached is a note from Mrs. Byrne. Dr. McQuaid asked writer to find out who Mrs. McAuley is.

Typed minutes of ‘V’ Committee meeting. The following items are mentioned in the report: Fr. Crean met Charles Brennan, Chairman, Radio Eireann Council, and suggested some talks would bare watching. Suitable Catholic laymen are available to give topical talks. Brennan was vague, and said that Mr. McManus is in charge. Members should systematically listen to talks to identify objectionable matter. Letter from Mrs Byrne was read, stating that Dr. Morris, Mount Merrion, had taken over from R. Hubbard. Inquiries to be made regarding rumours that the college was connected with abortion.
