              St. Audeon’s Boys’ National School Principal, pointed to the ruinous condition of the area. The letter was sent to Alderman John McCann, T.D., and forwarded to M. O’Brien, Co-Ordinating Technical Officer. The Parish Priest, shopkeepers and residents all wish to have the area rebuilt. The population was decreasing and the jobs of teachers were in jeopardy. Fr. T. Barry, P.P., wrote to P.J. Hernon, City Manager, emphasizing that the area is ideal for residential accommodation. O’Byrne argued that since the Dept. of Education sanctioned the building of a new school this in itself was evidence that a considerable amount of residential accommodation would be retained for several generations. -1967

              Typed letter to Fr. Diffney from Una Byrne. The IHA had a Brains’ Trust in the Mansion House. Fr. Corcoran was well able for Donal Nevin and held his own. Mr. Maloney, Secretary of the Contemporary Club, has resigned. Will be a loss as he kept an eye on liberal speakers. Replaced by Miss Pepita Keating, daughter of Justine Keating. The Communist Party have converted No. 37, Pembroke Road into flats. Are holding meetings in Pembroke Hall. She (Una) refuses admittance, but Art McArdle reporting to her.

              Typed report. The following items are mentioned in the report. After a vote it was decided (48 votes to 4) that the £150 awarded to the IHA would remain in central funds. The six new members of the Dundrum Asylum Committee not notified of the first meeting. Mrs. Byrne, a new member, contacted them and the meeting went ahead. Only seven members attended the Communist Party meeting since the rising in Hungary. The Plough has been taken over by the Communist Party to replace The Workers’ Voice. Better written but poor circulation. Liberal members in Fianna Fail not as active as before. Has great faith in the youth of Ireland. “The Catholic Faith and a good National outlook will stand to the men and women of future generations.”

Institute of Catholic Sociology criticised as only one member of Government invited to speak on the debate on P.R., and he was Mr. Childers, a Protestant. Also criticised for inviting Declan Costello on politics while no member of Government was invited. Not true as de Valera, Lemass and Lynch refused invitations.

              Typed letter to Fr. Martin [from Una Byrne – name and address redacted]. The Congress of the International Alliance of Women to be held in Dublin in 1961. Martin and she received invitation to American Embassy. Passed on information regarding the ‘Peace’ Congress in Japan. Spoke to Jim Larkin at meeting of Institution of Standards. There was a “dust up” at the National Executive of Fianna Fail over Booth’s remarks over Spain at Strasburg. Lemass to have talk with him. Andy Barr, a Communist, got on Committee of union! As Secretary of the Committee she will have to find a place for meetings and a Hostel for delegates. Will approach Loreto nuns for Loreto Hall.

              Handwritten note from ‘Granny’ [Una Byrne]. David Thornley left Fianna Fail with Dr. Browne. Relations with Uncle Sam are excellent. Looked on as an “adopted” niece. Worried over sponsors of Boycott African Goods Campaign. Has plan to upset the influence of some public representatives. Belfast trip disappointing for “old ladies”.
