              • Correspondence regarding routine details of community life and apostolate (first items referring to Fr [later Cardinal] M. Browne O.P.) a Dublin priest joins order.               Typed letter to Fr. Diffney. A new ‘Social’ Party is being formed. Will issue a paper called The Plough. Will be run by Dr. Browne, Rex McGall, Merrigan, Kevin Nolan and others. Has written to Lucy Kingston asking for a meeting of the International Committee of IHA to send letter to our representative in the United Nations protesting against the aggressions of Britain, France and Russia in Egypt and Hungary.

              Typed report on events in Dublin. The CP line is now centred on Co-existence and they are playing up the Ecumenical Council. Labour Party endeavouring to place members on Committee of Unions. At the Congress of the Irish Unions four CP members got positions. The 13th Club, formed by Dr. Noel Browne, has become a recruiting ground for the CP. Donal Nevin invited the Club to join the Labour Party but the Party did not agree to it. Michael Scott expressed his dissatisfaction with Pope John thought de Valera should be removed from his position. The Plough had a circulation of over 3,000 in April. Lucy Kingston was prevented from being co-opted on to the Central Committee.

              Copy of typed letter to Most Rev. Gerald P. O’Hara, Apostolic Nuncio, from +McQuaid. Encloses a memorandum on the White Paper on Health Services. Points out the profound difference that the Hierarchy must expect to find between the Government of de Valera and that of Costello. Costello’s Government, with exception of Dr. Browne and Mr. McBride, was in sympathy with the Church. Regarding de Valera, his policy towards the Church is one of distance. He would not make any reference to the Hierarchy in case of jeopradising Protestant support and that of the Liberal Independents. Neither did he want to antagonize the North of Ireland Protestants as this could affect Partition.
