John Hynes was born in Kilwarden in County Meath on 2 February 1879. He joined the Capuchin Franciscans at Rochestown Friary in County Cork in January 1901 and took Malachy as his religious name. Having successfully perused his religious studies in Rochestown, he was ordained to the priesthood in Kilkenny on 16 March 1907. He spent periods in both Kilkenny and Dublin until 1912 when he joined Fr. Luke Sheehan OFM Cap. in the newly established mission in Hermiston in Oregon on the American Pacific coast. He assisted Fr. Casimir Butler OFM Cap. in building up the local parish structures following the departure of Fr. Luke. Fr. Malachy returned to Ireland in 1920 and was initially assigned to the Kilkenny Friary before joining the community in Holy Trinity in Cork. In 1933 he was appointed guardian (local superior) of Rochestown and he remained there until 1937 when he returned to Holy Trinity. He was appointed Vicar there in 1940. For several years he worked as district delegate of the Seraphic Mass Association in Cork raising funds for the overseas’ missionary work of the Capuchin friars. He was also active in missionary work in Ireland particularly in the temperance campaign. Suffering from ill-health in his latter years, he died in Cork on 24 February 1955. He was buried in the cemetery adjoining Rochestown Capuchin Friary.

John Hyland was born near the village of Lanesborough in County Longford on 7 December 1881. He joined the Capuchin Franciscans in October 1900 and took Martin as his religious name. He was ordained to the priesthood by Abraham Brownrigg, Bishop of Ossory, at St. Kieran’s College in Kilkenny on 16 March 1907. He held a variety of offices within the Order mainly in the communities at Holy Trinity Friary and at Rochestown College in County Cork. For several years he was Professor of Canon Law in Rochestown and was later appointed guardian (local superior) of the community. He was later transferred to Holy Trinity in Cork city and served two terms as guardian of this foundation. He took a keen interest in the Third Order of St. Francis lay confraternity attached to Holy Trinity Church. He also acted as spiritual director to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He died while attempting to recuperate from a bout of influenza in Glengariff in County Cork. He was buried in the cemetery attached to Rochestown Friary.

William Hyland was born in the village of Lanesborough in County Longford on 11 February 1894. He joined the Capuchin Franciscans in November 1912 and took Justin as his religious name upon entering the novitiate. He was ordained to the priesthood on 21 May 1921. In 1929 he was transferred to the American mission custody. He was assigned to the community at the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Abbottstown in Pennsylvania. Just two years later he was recalled to Ireland and was appointed novice master. For the greater part of his life in ministry, Fr. Justin was involved in the formation and training of student friars. He was a lector of theology and director of students in both St. Bonaventure’s Hostel and in Rochestown Friary in County Cork and was master of cleric novices for twelve years. He also served as master of lay brother novices. In addition, he was guardian (local superior) of Holy Trinity Friary in Cork for seven years and was President of Father Mathew Memorial Hall on Church Street in Dublin from 1943 to 1945. He spent the later years of his life residing with the Raheny community in Dublin. He died on 24 May 1977. He was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin.

Patrick Hyland was born in County Longford on 2 March 1901. He joined the Capuchin Order in September 1918 and took Edmund as his religious name. He was ordained to the priesthood on 29 June 1927. Two years later he was transferred to the mission custody in the United States. His first assignment was as pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Oregon. He ministered there until 1947 when he moved to St. Joseph’s Parish in Roseburg, Oregon. During his term as pastor, he was instrumental in acquiring some new property on the edge of the town. He built a parish hall on the new site which served as a temporary church until funds could be raised to build a new place of worship. A school and rectory were also built and plans for a new church were also drawn up. In 1959 he was appointed pastor at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Fort Bragg in California. He remained here until 1961 when he was appointed guardian (local superior) at St. Patrick’s Friary in Wilmington in Delaware. He assisted in the transfer of this house to the New Jersey Capuchin Province. His health began to fail in the years afterwards and he was assigned to the community residing at San Lorenzo Friary, Santa Inés, California. He died in San Lorenzo on 9 August 1969 and was buried in the adjoining cemetery.

James Honohan was born in Donoughmore in County Cork on 16 September 1905. He joined the Capuchin Franciscans in April 1932 and took Patrick as his religious name. Shortly after his solemn (final) profession in April 1936, he was transferred to the United States mission custody. His initial assignment was in St. Patrick’s Friary in Wilmington, Delaware. In 1943 he was transferred to St. Joseph’s Church in Roseburg, Oregon, where he spent three years. In 1946 he came to St. Francis High School in La Cañada Flintridge, California, where he spent thirteen years, serving as cook and sacristan. Following another year in Willington, Br. Patrick returned to St. Francis High School. In 1966 he assigned to Mission Santa Inés, Solvang, California. He again served as cook and sacristan and maintained the mission’s grounds. He died in Santa Inés on 6 September 1979 and was buried in the cemetery adjoining San Lorenzo Friary.

Edward Patrick Holmes was born in Kirkwall, the largest town on Orkney, on 1 November 1886. He joined the Capuchin Franciscans in September 1906 and took Anthony as his religious name. He was ordained to the priesthood on 5 July 1914. A year later, he was transferred to the United States mission. In July 1920 he was ministering in Fort Bragg in California. He spent most of his time in ministry on the American Pacific Coast, working in churches around his vast parish of the Blessed Sacrament in Elk, California. Elk (originally known as Greenwood) was a lumber town situated on the coastal region of Mendocino County, north of San Francisco. The Blessed Sacrament Parish had been served by English Capuchin missionaries since 1903 and included churches built on various Indian reservations in the region. Fr. Anthony died (suddenly) in Elk on 12 June 1947.
