Edouard Christian was born in Andermatt, a mountain village in the canton of Uri in Switzerland, in 1837. He was the fourth child (from a family of thirteen) of Joseph Maria ‘Sebastian’ Christen and Karolina Danioth. He spent his early years helping his parents on their cattle farm. On 5 October 1855, he entered the Capuchin novitiate at Lucerne and took Bernard as his religious name. He made his solemn profession on 8 October 1856. He then undertook his clerical studies and was ordained to the priesthood on 29 July 1860. In 1876 Fr. Bernard was elected a General Definitor (Councillor), in which role he successfully renewed and updated the philosophical and theological studies of Capuchin clerical candidates. He also worked tirelessly to tighten up regular observance among the friars of the Capuchin Order. At the General Chapter of 1884, Fr. Bernard was elected as Minister General. Under his leadership, Capuchin missions were once more placed under the direction of the General Minister. He was also instrumental in the revision of the original 1530 Constitution of the Capuchin Order. Under his administration the number of friars began to grow, studies were reorganised, missions were given a new lease of life and the number of Capuchin jurisdictions increased. Fr. Bernard was also the first Capuchin General Minister to visit North America. He served as General Minister of the Capuchin friars from 1884 to 1908. His ceaseless work for the renewal of the Order was recognised by both Popes Leo XIII and Pius X, with the latter naming him Titular Archbishop of Stauropolis in 1908. He died the following year (11 March 1909) in the Institute of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in Ingenbohl, Switzerland. He was buried in Lucerne.

Patrick Francis Gaynor was born in Carrick-on-Suir in County Tipperary on 17 May 1925. He received his primary and secondary education at the local Christian Brothers’ school. He entered the Capuchin novitiate at Rochestown in County Cork on 3 October 1944. He took Barnabas as his religious name upon joining the Order. He obtained a BA degree from University College Cork in 1948 and then proceeded to Ard Mhuire Friary in County Donegal for his theological studies. He was ordained to the priesthood on 12 June 1952. He served as assistant master of novices in Rochestown Friary until July 1953 when he moved to Kilkenny where he served as a questor for five years. In 1958 he was transferred to the Church Street Friary in Dublin. He taught religion in various vocational schools for ten years. He attended University College Dublin from 1971 to 1973 and was awarded a Higher Diploma in Education and later a Diploma in Counselling and Career Guidance. He also held the position of Provincial Bursar for two years. A posting to Cape Town in South Africa for missionary work was cut short due to medical issues and he returned to the Church Street Friary in Dublin. He continued to be active in ministry (particularly with the Secular Franciscan Organisation and Padre Pio prayer groups) until his death on 14 May 2001. He was buried in the Capuchin plot in Dardistown Cemetery in County Dublin.

Kevin Mulligan was born in Dundalk in County Louth on 15 June 1922. He joined the Capuchin Franciscan Order in October 1941, took Betram as his religious name, and made his solemn vows on 4 October 1945. He was ordained to the priesthood on 16 June 1949. In September 1949 he was sent from Ireland to serve as associate pastor at St. Joseph’s Church in Roseburg in Oregon in the United States. His life in ministry in America was mostly connected with parish work. He served as associate pastor at St. Mary’s in Ukiah, California, and in Our Lady of Angels Parish in Hermiston, Oregon. Afterwards, he served as a pastor in St. Aloysius Church in Point Arena, California, in Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Fort Bragg, California, and in Our Lady of Angels Church in Burlingame, California. He also served as a councillor in the Irish Capuchin mission custody in the United States on three separate occasions. Subsequently, he was appointed as a chaplain at the Veterans Hospital in Fresno in California. He was also the first guardian of St. Francis of Assisi Friary in Burlingame in California. In 1998 he was appointed Provincial Archivist for the Western America Capuchin Province. In 2007 he retired to the Mercy Care and Retirement Centre in Oakland, California, where he died on 29 October 2016. He was buried in the cemetery attached to San Lorenzo Seminary at Mission Santa Inés, California.

Eamonn O’Mahony was born in Middleton, County Cork, on 30 August 1934, the son of James and Máire O’Mahony (née Tobin). He received his secondary education at the Seraphic College in Rochestown and entered the Capuchin novitiate on 3 October 1952. He took Brendan as his religious name upon joining the Order. He undertook his early academic studies in University College Cork, where he obtained a BA (1956), followed by an MA in 1957, both with first class honours. He then went to Ard Mhuire Friary near Creeslough in County Donegal for his theological studies and was ordained to the priesthood on 24 September 1960. From there he proceeded to the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome where he was awarded a Licentiate in Sacred Theology (STL) two years later. From there he went to the University of Louvain in Belgium, where he obtained a PhD ‘Summa cum Laude’ in 1964. On his return to Ireland, he was appointed to the Chair of Philosophy in University College Cork, a professorship, his uncle, Fr. James O’Mahony OFM Cap., had occupied before him. There followed thirty-four years of busy academic work, during which scores of students destined for the priesthood in numerous congregations and orders received their grounding in philosophical studies. After several years as a member of the Provincial Definitory (Council), he was elected Irish Capuchin Provincial Minister in 1976, and was re-elected in 1979. In the latter year, under his guidance, the Western American Capuchin Province came into being in California and Oregon. In Ireland, he oversaw the opening of the Capuchin friary in Carlow in 1977. In 1982, the friars also took charge of Gurranabraher parish in the Diocese of Cork and Ross. He continued in his role as philosophy professor in University College Cork until his retirement in 1999. He died in Holy Trinity Capuchin Friary on Father Mathew Quay in Cork on 14 September 2020. He was buried in the cemetery adjacent to Rochestown Friary in County Cork.
