Denis Corkery was born in Ballyvourney in County Cork on 6 April 1914. He received his early education in Ballyvourney National School and subsequently, attended Rochestown Seraphic College (1929-32) in County Cork. He was received into the Capuchin Order in October 1932 and took Fiacre as his religious name. He made his solemn profession on 4 October 1936 and was ordained to the priesthood on 14 June 1942. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts from University College Cork (UCC) in 1936 and graduated with a Master of Arts in 1937. Four years of theological studies followed in Ard Mhuire Friary in County Donegal, after which he returned to UCC to obtain a Doctorate in Philosophy in 1944. He then went to the International Capuchin College in Rome and studied at the Pontifical Gregorian University where he received a Licentiate of Sacred Theology (STL) in 1947. On his return to Ireland, he was appointed a lector in theology in Ard Mhuire. He spent three years in the Church Street community in Dublin from 1958 to 1961 after which he was transferred to the Capuchin house in Raheny where he spent the remainder of his life. During this time, he was engaged in pastoral work giving retreats and missions (especially retreats to religious), hearing confessions, preaching and general friary duty. Fluent in both Irish and French, he contributed several articles to various publications and was a frequent contributor to ‘The Father Mathew Record’ (later ‘Eirigh’). He died in Raheny on 15 November 1997 and was buried in the Capuchin plot in Glasnevin Cemetery.

Francis McDonnell was born in the town of Carrigaline in County Cork in 1872. He joined the Capuchin Franciscans in September 1889 and took Mark as his religious name. He was ordained to the priesthood on 2 July 1896. Shortly after his ordination, he took charge of the Catholic Boys’ Brigade on Church Street in Dublin. Following the Provincial Chapter of 1904, he was appointed guardian (local superior) of the Capuchin community in Kilkenny. He subsequently returned to Dublin and served as guardian of the Church Street Friary from 1919 to 1922. He was twice elected Provincial Definitor (councillor), from 1922-5 and from 1925-8. He was an active member of the Capuchin missionary staff and was well known as a preacher and retreat giver throughout the country. He died in Dublin on 12 June 1947 and was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery.

Edward Abraham Sutton was born in Monkstown in County Cork on 5 November 1876. His early education was with the Christian Brothers. He joined the Capuchin Franciscans in June 1898 and took Chrysostom as his religious name. He was solemnly professed as a friar in August 1902. He was ordained to the priesthood on 28 September 1902. He served as master of novices in Kilkenny from 1910 until his death on 11 November 1918. It was noted that ‘his death … came about from a severe attack of influenza contracted whilst ministering to those afflicted with the disease in Kilkenny city’. A local newspaper, ‘The Kilkenny People’ (16 November 1918), referred to the death from influenza of Fr. Chrysostom and noted the remarks of the city’s mayor in saying that the priest ‘was a most charitable man, and he would say he lost his life in trying to relieve the sufferings of the poor of Walkin Street and the neighbourhood during the epidemic’. Fr. Chrysostom was buried in the Capuchin plot in Foulkstown Cemetery in Kilkenny.

Angelo John Carroll was born in Dublin on 1 July 1908. He joined the Irish Capuchins in October 1927 and took Marcellus as his religious name. Soon after his ordination in Letterkenny in 1935, he volunteered to work as a missionary friar in South Africa. Aside from a short spell in Livingstone in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) between 1939 and 1942, Fr. Marcellus spent most of his life in ministry in Cape Town. Upon his arrival in South Africa, he was put in charge of the mission at Matroosfontein, a multiracial residential area just outside Cape Town. After his sojourn in Livingstone, he returned to Matroosfontenin where he served as parish priest until 1963. He then became parish priest at St. Mary of the Angels Parish in Athlone, another suburb of Cape Town. He remained here until 1968. In January 1976 he was transferred to the Parow Parish as Associate Pastor. In May 1976 he made his way to Regina Coeli Parish in Belgravia in the Athlone suburb where he worked as assistant pastor. In his twenty-five years in Matroosfontein, Fr. Marcellus succeeded in building up a thriving parish and he was well-known for giving numerous missions and retreats throughout South Africa. He was plagued by ill-health in his later years, but he continued to minister in the Cape Town mission until his death on 18 November 1980. He was buried in the Capuchin plot in Maitland Cemetery in Cape Town.

Emilio Paolucci was born in Italy on 22 December 1898. His family moved to the United States in 1916. His initial contact with the Capuchins was in Watts Parish in Los Angeles. He was among the first men to join the Irish Capuchin custody in California, entering the novitiate in Ireland in October 1927. He took Alexius as his religious name and made his solemn profession in Ard Mhuire Friary in County Donegal in September 1932. Br. Alexius was the first Capuchin brother to volunteer for missionary work in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). He spent ten years in Africa (1936-46) making a major contribution to the mission at a critical stage of its development. The result of his skilled work as a carpenter and builder can be seen in the churches and furnishings which he constructed in Livingstone, Sichili, Sancta Maria (Lukulu), Kalabo, Maramba, and in Cape Town, South Africa. He returned to Ireland in late 1946 and spent four years residing in St. Bonaventure’s Friary and with the community in Rochestown in County Cork. He returned to the United States in December 1950. His first assignment was in Santa Inés near Solvang in California where he worked for twelve years restoring and renovating the historic buildings of the old mission. In 1963 he was appointed to the newly established West Coast novitiate at San Lorenzo in Santa Inés Valley. He resided at the novitiate until 1970 before moving to Watts in Los Angeles and later to St. Francis High School in La Cañada Flintridge in California. He subsequently returned to San Lorenzo Seminary and died there on 27 August 1983. He was buried in the adjoining cemetery.
