Edward Cregan was born in Shanagolden in County Limerick on 19 October 1894. He was received into the Capuchin Order at Rochestown Friary in County Cork in February 1915 and took Colmcille as his religious name. Four years later he made his solemn profession. He was stationed in Rochestown College for two years before moving to Holy Trinity Friary in Cork city where he was resident for three years. His next appointment (1921) was as sacristan in St. Mary of the Angels on Church Street in Dublin. In 1924 he was sent as a missionary friar to California. Following the death of Fr. Albert Bibby OFM Cap., Pastor of the Santa Inés Mission, in February 1925, Br. Colmcille was sent there to lend assistance. He worked on various improvement projects at the old Franciscan mission. Aside from helping in the church and sacristy, he also designed and planted the boxwood Celtic cross in the mission garden. He returned to Ireland in the early 1930s and spent most of the remainder of his life (forty years) as sacristan with the Church Street Capuchin community in Dublin. He died on 10 December 1979 and was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin.

Maurice Cashell was born in Tralee, County Kerry, on 14 September 1927. He was received into the Capuchin novitiate in Rochestown, County Cork, in 1944. He took Vianney as his religious name upon joining the Capuchin Franciscans. He completed his philosophical studies in University College Cork and his theological studies in Ard Mhuire Friary in County Donegal. He was ordained to the priesthood in October 1952. Following his ordination, he was sent to Rome and later to Louvain for further studies. Shortly after his return to Ireland, he was assigned to a special ministry in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1965. He was transferred to the American Vice-Province in 1970 and was initially posted to San Buenaventura Friary in San Francisco helping in retreat ministry. During this time, he successfully applied for the position of philosophy teacher at San Francisco State University. However, he died before he could take up this academic role. His death (due to an un-diagnosed heart condition) occurred whilst he was giving a retreat to religious sisters in San Diego in California. He was buried in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Colma, San Mateo County, California.

Francis McDonnell was born in the town of Carrigaline in County Cork in 1872. He joined the Capuchin Franciscans in September 1889 and took Mark as his religious name. He was ordained to the priesthood on 2 July 1896. Shortly after his ordination, he took charge of the Catholic Boys’ Brigade on Church Street in Dublin. Following the Provincial Chapter of 1904, he was appointed guardian (local superior) of the Capuchin community in Kilkenny. He subsequently returned to Dublin and served as guardian of the Church Street Friary from 1919 to 1922. He was twice elected Provincial Definitor (councillor), from 1922-5 and from 1925-8. He was an active member of the Capuchin missionary staff and was well known as a preacher and retreat giver throughout the country. He died in Dublin on 12 June 1947 and was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery.

Charles Buckley was born in Cork on 17 July 1902. He joined the Capuchin Franciscans in October 1922 and took Eunan as his religious name. He was ordained to the priesthood in Cork on 29 June 1930. His initial ministry was in Holy Trinity Church in Cork, but he was transferred to the United States mission in 1931. In September 1936, St. Patrick’s Friary in Wilmington, Delaware, was officially designated as a novitiate and Eunan was appointed the first Novice Master. He held this position until early September 1938 when he returned to Ireland. During the Second World War he served as a chaplain in the Royal Air Force. Following the conclusion of hostilities, he returned to the United States. From 1956 to 1959 he was Pastor at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Fort Bragg in California. In 1959 he was transferred as Pastor to St. Joseph’s Parish in Roseburg, Oregon. He returned to Fort Bragg as Associate Pastor in Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in 1964. After several years of ministry here, he was appointed to Our Lady of Angels in Burlingame. He suffered a severe stroke in 1970 which ended his years in active ministry. He died in Burlingame, California, on 15 October 1974.

Michael Kelleher was born in Ballyvourney in County Cork on 3 June 1919. He was educated in Rochestown Seraphic College (County Cork), University College Cork and at the theological house in Ard Mhuire Capuchin Friary in County Donegal. He joined the Capuchin Franciscan Order in 1937 (taking Cyril as his religious name) and was ordained to the priesthood in 1946. From 1947, he was involved in various ministries with the Capuchins in what is now the Province of Our Lady of Angels in the Western United States, as director of clerics at Old Mission Santa Inés in Solvang (California) and later as Associate Pastor and Pastor. He was the director of clerics at St. Patrick’s Novitiate in Wilmington, Delaware, and served as both teacher and principal at St. Francis High School in La Cañada-Flintridge, California. He also served as guardian (local superior) of San Lorenzo Seminary in Santa Inés. For a time, he was also guardian and director of clerics at San Buenaventura Friary in San Francisco. He was also Vice Provincial of what is now the Province of Our Lady of Angels and was mission director while residing at Old Mission Santa Inés in Solvang. He died on 17 January 2002 in St. Francis Hospital in Santa Barbara and was buried in the cemetery adjoining San Lorenzo Seminary in California.

Maurice Buckley was born in Kilnamartyra, County Cork, on 25 January 1920. He joined the Capuchin Franciscans in January 1940. He was a postulant and novice in Kilkenny and took his solemn vows on 8 April 1944. He was part of the community in Rochestown Friary in County Cork until 1952. He then spent three years in Raheny in Dublin and a further eighteen months in Holy Trinity Friary in Cork. In 1956 he volunteered for missionary work in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). He spent twenty years in Africa as a missionary. He laboured in construction work in many of the mission stations established by the Irish Capuchins in Zambia including Kalabo, Sichili, Mongu and Lukulu. He returned to Ireland in 1978 and was initially stationed in Kilkenny before moving to Rochestown in County Cork. He died on 24 November 2003 and was buried in the cemetery attached to Rochestown Friary.

Louis Riordan was born in Leeds in England on 15 September 1891. He joined the Irish Province of the Capuchin Franciscans in September 1911 and took Urban as his religious name. Soon after his ordination he was sent to the mission custody established by the Irish Capuchins on the west coast of the United States. He was assigned to St. Mary’s parish in Ukiah, Mendocino County, California. During his time in Ukiah, he wrote a short account on the ministry of the Irish friars in the United States. In 1929 he was transferred to the Blessed Sacrament mission in Elk, California, where he ministered until 1936. From 1941 to 1945 he was an associate pastor at Our Lady of Angels parish in Hermiston in Oregon. He returned to Ireland in 1951 and was appointed to communities in Church Street, Dublin, Holy Trinity, Cork, and the Church of St. Francis in Kilkenny. His final years were spent in the Capuchin house in Raheny in Dublin. He died on 1 November 1973 and was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery, Dublin.

Early Life and Ministry
Cornelius Hyland was born John Hyland on 13 July 1901, in County Offaly. He entered the Capuchin Franciscan Order in Kilkenny, where he completed his ecclesiastical studies and was subsequently ordained to the priesthood. During the 1930s, Father Hyland served as the Director of Students at St. Bonaventure’s Friary in Cork. Concurrently, he served the Irish Province as the editor of the Liturgical Calendar.

Missionary Assignment to the United States
Around 1938, Father Hyland was assigned to the Capuchin Custody in America. From 1943 to 1946, he served as Pastor of Our Lady of Angels Parish in Hermiston, Oregon, succeeding the Reverend Alban Cullen. During his tenure in Oregon, he was elected as one of two assistants to the Custos Provincial, the Very Reverend Stephen Murtagh.

Pastorate at Burlingame, California
In 1946, Father Hyland succeeded the Reverend Sylvan Murphy as Pastor of Our Lady of Angels Parish in Burlingame, California, initiating a period of significant parish expansion during the post-World War II population boom.

Under his administration, the parish undertook extensive capital campaigns and construction projects:

• Chancery Approval & Land Acquisition: Secured permission from the archdiocesan chancery, raised necessary capital, and acquired property on Hillside Drive.
• Our Lady of Angels Church: Initiated construction on a new, larger parish church, which opened in 1950.
• Parochial Rectory: Completed construction on a larger friary rectory in 1952.
• Educational Expansion: Built new classrooms to accommodate the growing student body.
• Parochial Convent: Undertook the construction of a convent in 1958 for the teaching staff, the Sisters of Mercy.

Community Life and Final Years

Within the friary, Father Hyland maintained strict adherence to religious life, emphasizing communal meals paired with Scripture readings and the shared recitation of the Divine Office.

By 1960, failing health limited his active ministry. His final public act of devotion was the installation of a Statue of Our Lady of Fatima at the parish, which he had personally acquired during a pilgrimage to Fatima, Portugal, with Father Finnian Carroll. Father Hyland suffered a fatal heart attack the following year, dying on 18 October 1961. He was buried in San Francisco.
