Jeremiah Coughlan was born in Ballydehob in County Cork on 2 May 1908. He joined the Capuchin Franciscans in October 1926 and was ordained to the priesthood on 17 June 1934. He was sent to the United States shortly after his ordination. His first appointment was as assistant pastor in Roseburg, Oregon. In 1936 he was appointed assistant pastor in St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Bend (also in Oregon). He would be transferred to and from Oregon multiple times over his life in ministry. He was pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Roseburg from 1940 to 1947. At Bend he was responsible for the building of a new parish rectory. He also served as chaplain at St. Charles Memorial Hospital in Bend. He remained in Oregon until 1950 when he was appointed associate pastor in St. Lawrence of Brindisi Parish in Los Angeles, California. He was present for the establishment of the new Province of Our Lady of Angels (the Western American Capuchin Province) at Burlingame in California in 1979. He retired from ministry and returned to Ireland in the early 1980s. He died on 6 January 1985 and was buried in the cemetery attached to Rochestown Capuchin Friary in County Cork.

Patrick John Cox was born in Dublin on St. Patrick’s Day (17 March) in 1917. He entered the Capuchin novitiate in Kilkenny in July 1938 and took Xavier as his religious name. He was solemnly professed as a friar in 1942. Soon after his final profession, he volunteered for missionary work in the Prefecture of Victoria Falls in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). He left Ireland in late 1943 and undertook the difficult journey to Africa at the height of the Second World War. He arrived in Northern Rhodesia in January 1944. He spent twenty years working at the Sancta Maria mission station in Lukulu in the Western Province of Zambia. He also assisted in the building of a church and adjoining friary at the Saint Martin de Porres mission in Kaoma in 1968. A cancer diagnosis forced him to travel to Cape Town in South Africa to seek medical treatment in the early 1980s. He died in Cape Town on 2 December 1984 and was buried in the Capuchin plot in Maitland Cemetery.

Joseph Rice was born in County Laois on 28 May 1881. He joined the Capuchin Order on 1 May 1913 and took Fidelis as his religious name. The greater part of his religious life was spent in Rochestown Friary in County Cork where he worked as a cook. However, he also spent time in the Kilkenny community where he was entrusted with the training of lay brother candidates and novices as Brother Master. He also spent shorter periods in St. Bonaventure’s Hostel in Cork and in Ard Mhuire Friary in County Donegal in the early years of these foundations. His later years were spent in St. Mary of the Angels on Church Street in Dublin. Afflicted by long periods of ill-health, he died on 9 August 1963. He was buried in the cemetery adjoining the Capuchin Friary in Rochestown in County Cork.

Edward Kennedy was born in County Tipperary on 9 January 1897. He joined the Capuchin Order in January 1915 and took Isidore as his religious name. He was transferred to the Irish Capuchin mission in the United States shortly after his ordination to the priesthood in 1924. From 1926 to 1928 he was assigned to the staff of St. Anthony’s College in Mendocino City in California where the friars had established a small foundation to train those aspiring to join the Order. In 1933 he was briefly transferred to Our Lady of Angels Parish in Burlingame. He spent a good portion of the 1930s in Arizona for health reasons after advice from doctors to seek a drier climate. Returning to the Pacific Coast, he spent some time at St. Benedict’s Parish in McKenzie Ridge in Oregon. He remained here until 17 June 1954 when he was appointed Pastor of St. Anthony’s Church in Willits in California. In 1957 he was transferred to St. Mary’s Parish in Ukiah, California. In the 1960s he was a member of the Capuchin community at San Lorenzo Seminary at the Old Mission Santa Inés, Solvang, California. During this time, he worked as a chaplain to the Brothers of St John of God Rest Home in Ojai Valley. He spent his final years in a retirement home in Santa Barbara and died on 1 October 1973. He was buried in the cemetery adjacent to the Old Mission Santa Inés.

Timothy Heffernan was born on St. Patrick’s Day (17 March) in 1932 in Turner’s Cross in Cork. He joined the Capuchin Franciscans in October 1949 and took Enda as his religious name. He was ordained a priest in St. Eunan’s Cathedral in Letterkenny, County Donegal, on 30 May 1957. Soon after his ordination he travelled to the Western United States Mission. He was initially a parish priest in St. Mary’s Church in Ukiah, California. For many years, he was later a teacher and Dean at St. Francis High School in La Canada, California. In April 1979 he became the first Minister Provincial of the newly established Province of Our Lady of Angels in the Western United States. Following the completion of his term as Provincial Minister in 1985, he served as Novice Master in San Lorenzo Seminary in California. Later, he moved to San Bonaventura Friary in San Francisco where he took up the ministry of retreat director. He subsequently moved to St. Francis Friary in Burlingame. He suffered from ill-health in his final years, and he died on 24 April 2001. He was buried in the cemetery attached to San Lorenzo Seminary, Santa Inés, California.

Maurice Buckley was born in Kilnamartyra, County Cork, on 25 January 1920. He joined the Capuchin Franciscans in January 1940. He was a postulant and novice in Kilkenny and took his solemn vows on 8 April 1944. He was part of the community in Rochestown Friary in County Cork until 1952. He then spent three years in Raheny in Dublin and a further eighteen months in Holy Trinity Friary in Cork. In 1956 he volunteered for missionary work in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). He spent twenty years in Africa as a missionary. He laboured in construction work in many of the mission stations established by the Irish Capuchins in Zambia including Kalabo, Sichili, Mongu and Lukulu. He returned to Ireland in 1978 and was initially stationed in Kilkenny before moving to Rochestown in County Cork. He died on 24 November 2003 and was buried in the cemetery attached to Rochestown Friary.
