John (Seán) Mannion was born in Dublin on 7 April 1929. He attended the Capuchin College in Rochestown in County Cork and joined the Order in October 1947 taking Godfrey as his religious name. He was ordained to the priesthood in May 1955. Soon after his ordination he was sent to Rome to undertake further theological studies obtaining a Licentiate of Sacred Theology (STL) in 1958. On his return to Ireland, he joined the community in St. Bonaventure’s Hostel and completed a Higher Diploma in Education in University College Cork. He spent the following ten years in Ard Mhuire Friary in County Donegal as a director of student friars and vicar. He was transferred to the Church Street community in Dublin in 1967 and would remain here for the next thirty years. He served as the national spiritual assistant for the Third Order of St. Francis confraternity for many years and was well known for the retreats and missions he gave to diocesan clerics and religious of other congregations and orders. He moved to the Capuchin residence in Raheny in 1998. Following a period of illness, he died in Raheny on 2 April 2000. He was buried in Dardistown Cemetery.

O’Sullivan, Ephrem, 1904-1958, Capuchin priest

John Joseph O’Sullivan was born on 23 March 1904 in the town of Charleville in County Cork. His initial education was in the local national school and later at the Capuchin College in Rochestown, County Cork. He was an active member of the Fianna Éireann organisation in Cork during the War of Independence. He joined the Capuchin Order in Kilkenny in September 1923 and took Ephrem as his religious name. After his ordination in Cork in 1931 he was transferred to the Irish Capuchin mission custody in the Western United States where he ministered for several years. In 1936 he was appointed a pastor in the Sacred Heart parish in Lincoln, Nebraska. He held this position for only one year (1937) since financial difficulties and other considerations forced the Capuchin friars to withdraw from the Lincoln Diocese. After leaving Nebraska he assisted in parish missions and novenas. In 1938 Ephrem returned to Ireland and joined the community residing in St. Mary of the Angels Friary on Church Street in Dublin. He also resided for brief periods in both Kilkenny and in the Ard Mhuire Friary in County Donegal. He died in St. John of God Hospital in Stillorgan, County Dublin, on 12 July 1958 and was buried in Glasnevin Cemetery.

Kevin Mulligan was born in Dundalk in County Louth on 15 June 1922. He joined the Capuchin Franciscan Order in October 1941, took Betram as his religious name, and made his solemn vows on 4 October 1945. He was ordained to the priesthood on 16 June 1949. In September 1949 he was sent from Ireland to serve as associate pastor at St. Joseph’s Church in Roseburg in Oregon in the United States. His life in ministry in America was mostly connected with parish work. He served as associate pastor at St. Mary’s in Ukiah, California, and in Our Lady of Angels Parish in Hermiston, Oregon. Afterwards, he served as a pastor in St. Aloysius Church in Point Arena, California, in Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Fort Bragg, California, and in Our Lady of Angels Church in Burlingame, California. He also served as a councillor in the Irish Capuchin mission custody in the United States on three separate occasions. Subsequently, he was appointed as a chaplain at the Veterans Hospital in Fresno in California. He was also the first guardian of St. Francis of Assisi Friary in Burlingame in California. In 1998 he was appointed Provincial Archivist for the Western America Capuchin Province. In 2007 he retired to the Mercy Care and Retirement Centre in Oakland, California, where he died on 29 October 2016. He was buried in the cemetery attached to San Lorenzo Seminary at Mission Santa Inés, California.

McGillicuddy, Gabriel, 1901-1998, Capuchin brother

Eugene McGillicuddy was born in Cork on 8 September 1901. An enthusiastic and prominent member of the Third Order of St. Francis confraternity in his native city, he entered the Capuchin novitiate in April 1939 and took Gabriel as his religious name. After his profession, he was for some years a member of the Ard Mhuire community in County Donegal. He subsequently volunteered for the African missions and arrived in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) in February 1946. Br. Gabriel initially worked in Mukunkiki with Fr. Aquinas Carroll OFM Cap. and Fr. Salvator Quinn OFM Cap. In 1948, a decision was taken to move this mission to Mangango, located about thirty kilometres distant, and Br. Gabriel enjoyed a long association with this locality. He was particularly involved in the construction of mission churches, hospitals, and schools. In 1959, Fr. Bruno McKnight OFM Cap. and Br. Gabriel began work on the church of Saint Michael the Archangel and adjoining school at Nalionwa. This work was completed in 1960. He also supervised the construction of Saint John’s Secondary School in Katongo (1962) and Holy Cross Secondary School in Malengwa (1964). Br. Gabriel returned to Ireland in July 1983. He died at Ard Mhuire Capuchin Friary in County Donegal on 7 July 1998 and was buried in the adjoining cemetery.

Grace, John, 1936-2013, Capuchin priest

William Grace was born in Dublin on 18 July 1936. He was received into the Capuchin Franciscan Order on 3 October 1953 and took John as his religious name. He spent his novitiate years in Rochestown Friary and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from University College Cork. He was ordained to the priesthood in County Donegal in June 1961. Following his ordination, he volunteered for missionary work and arrived in Livingstone in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) in September 1961. He remained a missionary friar in Zambia for the rest of his life (aside from year spent in St. Patrick’s College in Maynooth, County Kildare, taking a higher diploma in education). He returned to Zambia and took up a staff position at the Teachers’ Training College in Malengwa near Mongu in Western Zambia. He also acted as superior and parish priest in Malengwa, a location covering approximately two hundred and fifty square miles with a Catholic populace of about four thousand. He was appointed Vicar General in Mongu, the capital of the Western Province of Zambia, in 1997. He died in Lusaka, Zambia, on 2 October 2013. He was buried in the cemetery attached to the Capuchin novitiate at the Camerino Friary in Lusaka.
