Photographic album of Fr. Jarlath Gough OFM Cap. The album contains un-captioned black and white photographic prints. Fr. Jarlath was resident in Northern Rhodesia from 1936-49. The collection includes some views of local worshipers and parishioners (in Northern Rhodesia and in South Africa). Includes prints of Fr. Christopher Crowley OFM Cap., Fr. Luke Sheehan OFM Cap., Fr. Timothy Phelim O’Shea OFM Cap., Fr. Killian Flynn OFM Cap., Fr. Edwin Fitzgibbon OFM Cap. (Provincial Minister from 1931-7) with Fr. Paschal Larkin OFM Cap., Fr. Casimir Butler OFM Cap. and others, a group of young friars at St. Bonaventure’s Friary, the voyage of the Union Castle Line ship, RMMV 'Cape Town Castle', in December 1947.

The volume is titled in print on the fly leaf: ‘Archives of the Franciscan Capuchin Monastery, Kilkenny’. The volume was manufactured by Dollard Printing House, Dublin, and appears to have been used as an official archival record book for the Capuchin Friary in Kilkenny. It includes manuscript and typescript copies of documents pertaining to the administration of the Irish Province. Many of the documents are copy circular letters from Capuchin Ministers General or from Irish Capuchin Provincial Ministers. Other documents include letters to the guardian of Kilkenny Friary, letters of obedience (with particular reference to the Kilkenny community), notices of jubilees and deaths, and other official documents from the Provincial Minister and Definitory (Council). The volume includes:
pp 14-15. Circular letter from Fr. Bernard Christen of Andermatt OSFC, Minister General, Peckham, 29 Oct. 1890. Refers to the recent pastoral visitation of the Irish Capuchin Province: ‘It rejoices us much to say that, on the whole, we have found things in a good and satisfactory condition’. With a transcribed copy in volume.
pp 15-23. Copy circular letter from Fr. Bernard Christen of Andermatt OSFC, Minister General of the Capuchin Order, Dublin. 21 Oct. 1890. Outlines the regulations set down following the general visitation to the Irish Province. The regulations mainly refer to matters of discipline, studies and formation, the exercise of prayer and devotion and the celebration of religious feast days. Article 20 affirms that ‘each of our places shall have its own conventual archives, in which shall be kept under lock and key all official and circular letters issued by the general or provincial, and the papers concerning the House’. He refers to the great ‘influx into our Seraphic College’, the increase of students, and to the fact that ‘the number of our Priests shall be increased by five towards the end of the year’. Reference is also made to a ‘kind benefactress’ who by a donation of £1,000 helped to put Rochestown Monastery on its legs …’. Fr. Bernard also refers to the good work which has been done in other houses. He affirmed that a ‘magnificent monastery’ now stands upon the ‘almost plague-stricken ruin at Kilkenny and the £4,000 which at least have been expended thereon is a gift of another kind benefactor. Not only has the back-bone of the hitherto gigantic debt on the Dublin House [Church Street] been broken but by an effort as laudable as it was ingenious the Fathers have contrived a plan by which the whole debt can be wiped out during the next administration’. On the expanding reach of Capuchin preaching and missions, Fr. Bernard wrote: ‘so great was the success achieved that we were even invited there again [to Belfast] in the hotbed of orangeism’. pp 311-337. Letters of obedience, c.1874-1910. Fr. Angelus Healy OFM Cap. compiled a list of these obediences under the headings of date, ‘from’ [usually coming from the Provincial Minister], to [the name of the friar] and ‘import’ [place of transfer]’. The list is extant at CA KK/1/2/5.

Bound volume containing newspaper clippings providing accounts of the tenement collapse and the subsequent funeral and burial of the seven victims. The clippings also give lists of subscribers to the relief fund established after the disaster. The volume also contains a manuscript list of twenty-seven Capuchin friars at St. Marys of the Angels, Church Street, at Rochestown College, and at Father Mathew’s (Holy Trinity) Church in Cork. The list is headed by Fr. Paul Neary OSFC, ‘the Lord Mayor’s Chaplain’. The list also includes Fr. Joseph Fenlon OSFC, ‘superior of Fr. Mathew’s Church, Cork’, and Fr. Edwin Fitzgibbon OSFC, President, Rochestown College, Cork. The volume also contains a manuscript list of people with private addresses in the environs of Church Street and North King Street. The list also notes ‘Father Mathew Hall’ for all the signatories. This may be a list of members of a religious sodality or, alternatively, a list of subscribers to the Tenement Disaster fund.

Brendan O’Callaghan OFM Cap., Central Council of Irish County Associations; Eugene Twomey, Secretary, Fianna Fail, Inc., Irish Republican Party of America; Charles F. Tiernan; Joseph O’Byrne of the Fathers’ Albert & Dominic Committee; and the Irish American National Alliance. The letters refer to appeals from various Irish-American republican organizations calling for the repatriation to Ireland of the mortal remains of Fathers Albert Bibby OFM Cap. and Dominic O’Connor OFM Cap.

Letters regarding a dispute over the editorship of the temperance publication, 'The Father Mathew Record', also known as 'The Irish Home Journal'. The file includes a letter from Brian O’Higgins to Fr. Edwin Fitzgibbon OSFC, Provincial Minister, complaining about his dismissal as associate editor of the 'Record' by Fr. Joseph Fenlon OSFC who ‘desired to keep politics out of the Journal’. O’Higgins, a member of Sinn Féin, admits that he is ‘on what is known as “the run”’. With notes by Fr. Edwin regarding the proprietorship of the Journal, and the need to reserve the appointment of editor to the council of the Capuchin Franciscan Order in Ireland. Later, Fr. Joseph wrote to Fr. Edwin confirming his resignation from the Presidency of Father Mathew Hall and the temperance sodality. The file also includes a signed notice of a special meeting of the Hall Committee affirming that the ‘"Record" was started by Fr. Aloysius [Travers], President of the Hall … [and] that the Office of the Record was transferred to the Hall premises’. The committee members contended that the 'Record' magazine was the property of the committee ‘and that the Provincial Superiors acted without consideration of the circumstances when … they decided to take it over and have it conducted independently of the committee and its President’. (10 June 1920).

Ledger of loans and monies supplied to the Irish Capuchin missions in Africa compiled by Fr. Kieran O’Callaghan OFM Cap., Provincial Secretary. The ledger includes records of money supplied to Fr. Alban Cullen OFM Cap. and Fr. Oliver O’Hanlon OFM Cap. to build parish churches in Athlone and Parow, Cape Town, in March 1933. £1,700 was given to Monsignor Killian Flynn OFM Cap. to build a friary (14 June 1937), and £1,000 was given to Fr. Casimir Butler OFM Cap. for Livingstone Church in Northern Rhodesia. The accounts also include monies derived from the Seraphic Mass Association (SMA) from Aug. 1931-Jan. 1935. The accounts are signed are by Fr. Edwin Fitzgibbon OFM Cap. Provincial Minister, 10 Aug. 1937.

Lectures on the history of the Irish Capuchin missions (primarily in Africa) compiled by Fr. Angelus Healy OFM Cap. The talks were likely prepared for promotional and educational purposes. They include copy documents including a letter from the Most Rev. Bernard O’Riley, Vicar Apostolic of Cape Town, to Fr. Edwin Fitzgibbon OFM Cap., Provincial Minister, requesting a Capuchin foundation in his diocese (12 May 1927), and copy letters from Archbishop Carlo Salotti, Secretary of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith, to Fr. Melchor a Benisa OFM Cap., Minister General, re the Irish Capuchin mission in Barotseland, Northern Rhodesia (Jan. 1931).

Letter to Fr. Edwin Fitzgibbon OFM Cap. from Fr. Senan Moynihan OFM Cap. (21 Oct. 1936) re the financial situation of 'The Capuchin Annual' and 'The Father Mathew Record'. Fr. Senan insists that the publications office is ‘solvent’. He adds ‘I am about half-ways through with the 1937 'Annual'. 21,000 copies will be printed. The gross revenue from this edition will be £4,125. … The total cost of the production will be £2,500. The gross profit £1,625; from £800 to £1,000 net profit’.
