Joseph Rice was born in County Laois on 28 May 1881. He joined the Capuchin Order on 1 May 1913 and took Fidelis as his religious name. The greater part of his religious life was spent in Rochestown Friary in County Cork where he worked as a cook. However, he also spent time in the Kilkenny community where he was entrusted with the training of lay brother candidates and novices as Brother Master. He also spent shorter periods in St. Bonaventure’s Hostel in Cork and in Ard Mhuire Friary in County Donegal in the early years of these foundations. His later years were spent in St. Mary of the Angels on Church Street in Dublin. Afflicted by long periods of ill-health, he died on 9 August 1963. He was buried in the cemetery adjoining the Capuchin Friary in Rochestown in County Cork.

Kennedy, Isidore, 1897-1973, Capuchin priest

Edward Kennedy was born in County Tipperary on 9 January 1897. He joined the Capuchin Order in January 1915 and took Isidore as his religious name. He was transferred to the Irish Capuchin mission in the United States shortly after his ordination to the priesthood in 1924. From 1926 to 1928 he was assigned to the staff of St. Anthony’s College in Mendocino City in California where the friars had established a small foundation to train those aspiring to join the Order. In 1933 he was briefly transferred to Our Lady of Angels Parish in Burlingame. He spent a good portion of the 1930s in Arizona for health reasons after advice from doctors to seek a drier climate. Returning to the Pacific Coast, he spent some time at St. Benedict’s Parish in McKenzie Ridge in Oregon. He remained here until 17 June 1954 when he was appointed Pastor of St. Anthony’s Church in Willits in California. In 1957 he was transferred to St. Mary’s Parish in Ukiah, California. In the 1960s he was a member of the Capuchin community at San Lorenzo Seminary at the Old Mission Santa Inés, Solvang, California. During this time, he worked as a chaplain to the Brothers of St John of God Rest Home in Ojai Valley. He spent his final years in a retirement home in Santa Barbara and died on 1 October 1973. He was buried in the cemetery adjacent to the Old Mission Santa Inés.

Paolucci, Alexius, 1898-1983, Capuchin brother

Emilio Paolucci was born in Italy on 22 December 1898. His family moved to the United States in 1916. His initial contact with the Capuchins was in Watts Parish in Los Angeles. He was among the first men to join the Irish Capuchin custody in California, entering the novitiate in Ireland in October 1927. He took Alexius as his religious name and made his solemn profession in Ard Mhuire Friary in County Donegal in September 1932. Br. Alexius was the first Capuchin brother to volunteer for missionary work in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia). He spent ten years in Africa (1936-46) making a major contribution to the mission at a critical stage of its development. The result of his skilled work as a carpenter and builder can be seen in the churches and furnishings which he constructed in Livingstone, Sichili, Sancta Maria (Lukulu), Kalabo, Maramba, and in Cape Town, South Africa. He returned to Ireland in late 1946 and spent four years residing in St. Bonaventure’s Friary and with the community in Rochestown in County Cork. He returned to the United States in December 1950. His first assignment was in Santa Inés near Solvang in California where he worked for twelve years restoring and renovating the historic buildings of the old mission. In 1963 he was appointed to the newly established West Coast novitiate at San Lorenzo in Santa Inés Valley. He resided at the novitiate until 1970 before moving to Watts in Los Angeles and later to St. Francis High School in La Cañada Flintridge in California. He subsequently returned to San Lorenzo Seminary and died there on 27 August 1983. He was buried in the adjoining cemetery.

Daly, Eltin, 1918-2002, Capuchin priest

Eugene Daly was born in Bantry in County Cork on 7 March 1918. He joined the Capuchin Franciscans in October 1939 and took Eltin as his religious name. He completed his BA and MA in University College Cork and was ordained to the priesthood in Ard Mhuire Capuchin Friary in County Donegal by Bishop William MacNeely on 27 May 1948. He obtained a Higher Diploma in Education at London University in 1949 and shortly afterwards set out for the mission in Northern Rhodesia (later Zambia). He took charge of the Teacher Training College in Lukulu for seven years. In 1956 he moved the western outpost at Sihole for a further six years (until 1962), where he advanced his mastery of the local Lozi language. For four years (1962-6) he was at Maramba near Livingstone. During this time he compiled an original translation of the liturgical texts into Lozi following the adoption of the vernacular (after the Second Vatican Council). And all the while he maintained a keen interest in catechetical matters. In 1966 Fr. Eltin left Africa and made his way to Oxford in England. He was appointed to run a chaplaincy service to Irish emigrants and travellers residing in Britain. He worked out of a house on Leopold Street in Oxford while involved in his ministry to Irish travellers and emigrants. He died in London on 12 November 2002 and was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery in North Kensington in the British capital.
